I was in deep conversation just last night saying nearly the same thing.
Also, we shouldn't treat people the way they deserve. It's not about what they deserve - it's about treating them the way they need so they can be the best they can be. Even if you loathe someone, the act of hatred damages the hater more. And it's not really about forgiveness, either. It's about what makes the world its best. Our actions are infectious. Part of loving ourselves is the action of loving others, because it comes right back onto us.
